The Lady Machinist Curiosity Chronicles Book 1 eBook Ava Morgan Reviews
Interesting idea but bit underdeveloped at times. The machine capacities are never explained nor are the other steam punk features. Ending very rushed too.
Characters you really care about, enough descriptive passages to "see" the action without getting bogged down in details. It is a very enjoyable read and I will definitely pursue more of this author's books.
Half way through I got bored with the characters. Here we have a widow who is also a genius mechanic and strong willed to boot, and she doesn't make a point of asking to fix the engines on the boat. The ship has a six man crew which indicates a high level of automation, but the INVENTOR OF AUTOMATONS shows no desire to get busy after the ship was attacked by pirates. Nope. Here's a mop.
I love Steampunk, and this book doesn't disappoint. The romance is a little lame, but the story is good. I hope the other books in the series will involve more detail on the automatons.
I liked the heroine; she was strong willed and smart and didn't apologize for it. Everyone was a bit inconsistent in personality, motivations, and behavior, which detracted from my enjoyment of the story. I think the review which called it "rushed" had a point - there were several areas (particularly characterization/motivation) which needed more elaboration.
The big downfall of this book, however, was the proofreading - or rather the lack thereof. I'm pretty tolerant of spelling mistakes and quirks of punctuation, but I have no patience with misused words, and this book was full of them, and of odd constructions. The heroine had "ill sense that something unscrupulous had transpired"? "Rhys made mind to suggest..."? "Exhaustive" instead of "exhausting"... And that's all within about a page or two.
Light weight Steampunk. Characters are a bit comic book like and don't show much development as the book progresses. Concept is not bad and the book has lots of potential but does not realize a lot of it. Lots of action but I found it a bit obvious as to where things were going and what was going to happen next.
Well written and not many points for the Grammar Nazi's to complain. Priced right for what it is. Will probably try the next book to see if the series gains strength as the author gains more experience. Sometimes an author has to get that first book out of the way almost as a release and then subsequent books get better and better. Hopefully this is the case here.
Take a lonely Greek widow, add a rakish British diplomat/spy, throw in vicious pirates, spice with the widow's wind-up war robots, and you've got a rollicking steampunk adventure with a lot of sexual tension.
Lydia lost her husband to pirates that infest the Mediterranean. To protect her precious island home, she created mechanical men to defend her people against further incursions. When her king commands her to sell her creations to New Britannia, she's livid. It doesn't help that the British ambassador Rhys is the first man to pique her interest since her beloved husband's death. Lydia's con job to accompany her mechanical men to New Britannia aboard Rhys' ship leaves him flummoxed and more than a little attracted to the lady machinist.
The first couple of chapters feel a little stilted, but once Lydia and Rhys start trading barbs, the pace picks up considerably. The best part is the insistence of Rhys' first mate Malcolm that Lydia act like a woman. Let's just say she know more than one way wield a wrench. When she fixes the ship's steam engines, even Malcolm has to admit she's better with a spanner than a needle.
I think my only complaints are minor. I would have liked a little more background on the incident that led them to the Cabinet of Intellectual Curiosities. I also would have liked a longer story. But I don't think Malcolm could survive Lydia if it was. *grin*
